Stereo Mix Troubleshooting for PC
Common issues noted
- No sound/audio levels showing in audition when recording.
- Audition freezes when I try to record audio from the internet.
- Stereo mix disappeared from the available options.
- Audition won’t record zoom or live stream.
- Important note: Stereo Mix only works with laptop audio (via direct headphone or speakers). The Stereo Mix function does not work with audio playing from other devices like desktop docks, headphone jacks, external monitors/TVs or Bluetooth/wireless devices.
Option #1 How to insure the laptop's Stereo Mix input is enabled and metering audio.
- Begin by typing "Sound settings" into the search bar at bottom left of your taskbar and choose the app from the results.
- Maximize the new window to full screen. There are two ways to proceed to the Sound properties window.
Either scroll all the way to the bottom and select the More sound settings option (see red box)
OR
Depending on your laptop model, select the blue Sound Control Panel text in the upper right of the window
- Via either path select the Recording tab from new pop up Sound window, and find Stereo Mix (see yellow box) in the list. Confirm it is in a ready state.
If Stereo Mix is displaying disabled then simply *right click on the Stereo Mix device and choose Enable from the pull down menu.
OR
If Stereo Mix is not in the list then right click in the white space of the list to bring up the pull down menu. Select/check
the show disabled devices option. Then repeat the prior *action to enable.
- Last step! Be sure to restart Adobe Audition and navigate to Audio Hardware input settings to confirm Audition input is set to Stereo Mix.
In Audition Top Menu proceed to: Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware>Audio Input…. Toggle the input to Stereo Mix, or may possibly
need to toggle to microphone and back to Stereo Mix. Choose Apply and close preferences window.
- Re-test Audition recording function.
Option #2 Confirming the Stereo Mix input is not muted.
- Using the guide from Option #1, Right click on Stereo Mix device under Recording tab and select properties.
- Under the Levels tab from additional new Stereo Mix Properties pop up window, insure the speaker icon (see green box) does not display a no symbol/circle with backslash icon. Select speaker button to unmute, if necessary.
- Re-test Audition recording function.
Lastly, if restarting the computer and keeping an eye out for any pending updates to install during the reboot doesn't resolve the issue.
